Social media is a big part of many teens' lives. A 2018 Pew Research Centre survey of nearly 750 13- to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost constantly and 97% use a social media platform, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

Social media is gaining subscribers every day, and youth are actively using one or more social media platforms. Growth in technology has sparked an exponential rate of using social media for communication, marketing, and other activities among youth. While there are many positive impacts of social media on young people, there are also negative repercussions of the use of various social media platforms.

Consequences of social media on youth in recent years Social media has become a major way of communication among people. People entertain themselves by using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Instagram and many more. No matter where someone lives everyone is using and connected to these social sites. Social media is a term used for interaction between people in which they share and exchange ideas through blogs and social sites.

In modern life, social media is developing fast. It is used by many people all over the world. Social media is especially very popular among the young. However, there are many young people who cannot control themselves and are addicted to social media. Addiction to social media has many serious effects, including poor study habits, living away from reality and bad health.

Youth can utilize social media to communicate their ideas and set up e-commerce marketing channels through social media platforms. However, access to explicit and dangerous information is a major threat associated with young people using social media. Social media is a prominent part of youth in the contemporary world, but its use should be regulated to ensure that young people only reap the positive benefits of technology.

Social media allows the social growth of the society and also helps businesses. It provides tools like social media marketing that can reach a million of potential clients. The pages that people usually follow are related to dance, food blog, art, beautiful quotes, etc. which really motivated me to find the hidden passion or interest or hobby. Social media is a great tool for creating awareness about any social cause. Some are a part of a NGO which works unconditionally on Women Employment, Single Income families and underprivileged children through relevant healthcare, innovative education and environmental based livelihood programs. Through social media this NGO is doing every possible thing they can do to make people aware about their work.

Employers can reach out to potential job seekers. Through many social media apps and job portals, the youth are able to get internships or part time or full time depending on their preferences.
Moreover, youth are becoming more tolerant of diversity, following the ability to communicate with people from different parts of the world in various interest groups on social media. The enhancement of cultural competence is quite a desirable effect on social media.

The networks developed through interaction processes on social media also enhance access to business opportunities for youth. Young people are developing small businesses and selling goods and services through social media.

Many physiatrists believe that social media is a single most factor causing depression and anxiety in people. It is also a cause of poor mental growth in children. Increased use of social media can lead to poor sleeping patterns. There are many other negative effects like cyber bullying, body image issues etc. as well. There is an increased ‘Fear of Missing out’ (FOMO) at an all-time high in youth because of social media. Social media has promoted the development of sedentary lifestyles among young people.

Youth spend most of their time chatting with their friends on social media through smartphones and computers, and this has led to a high preference for staying indoors.

Social media is detrimental to grades in school because studies have shown that as the hours spent on social media increase, grades deteriorate for the students.

Social media has also facilitated a platform where young people can be easily victimized by individuals with malicious intentions. For instance, sex predators, identity thieves, and conmen have been targeting profiles belonging to young people because they are easily lured into their traps.

Social media has provided young people with a communication avenue that is tied to various benefits. This includes the development of a wide social network that enhances opportunities and cultural competence. However, it is imperative for young people to use various platforms carefully to avoid being victimized by cybercriminals.

In conclusion, although using social media has many benefits in our lives, addiction to social media is not good. It will have awful influences on studying, make us live way from reality and have bad effects on health. In order to avoid being addicted to social media, young people should spend more time playing sports, studying and taking part in activities in schools.
